Anyway, just assume that the dude has autism, or some kinda neurological divergence or mental disorder that causes them to over analyze everything, and is so used to arriving at the wrong conclusion that they subconsciously subvert themselves whenever they get their hopes up so as not to be let down, or make the other party uncomfortable. If you're dealing with someone like that, just downright say it, and hope for the best.
