you know who you give sympathetic backstories to? redeemable bad characters. tyrion had a justification, had a sympathetic backstory, and he will be redeemed in the end because of that. theon was an asshole and did terrible things, but he was doing what he did because he never felt like he belonged, and just wanted to create a place he could belong, and he will be redeemed because of this. they will be punished by the reaction to their actions and therefore redeemed. but what narrative purpose do we have when these characters are just pure antagonists? what does it matter if they get neglected because of their actions? isnt that justice? how can you try and pin this as anything but a fitting reaction to a terrible action?? joffery was treated worse by his father than aegon was. joffery was knocked out when he was a little kid by robert backhanding him so hard. his father never even liked him. and is this used to justify joffery being a psychopath that enjoys hurting people? no. no one looks at robert hitting and ignoring joffery and thinks, 'ah, thats why he does that he does. poor joffery." so why the fuck are people doing this for aegon???
