One villain that comes to mind would be Kuja from Final Fantasy 9. I enjoyed how unlike most FF antagonists, Kuja was given an arc alongside the protagonists. From the earliest introduction he is portrayed as being a stereotypical weapons dealer profiting off of the world's military trade. Later it's shown he's acting as an agent for another antagonist that's trying to save a dying world by stealing the current planet's life force. Eventually once that task is complete it's made known that Kuja would no longer be of use to the greater threats machinations. Having obtained the ultimate power to change his destiny only to have it snatched away by a cruel twist of fate, Kuja finally breaks mentally and selfishly decided to kill both planets. Prior to dying Kuja uses the last of his abilities to save his brother Zidane and his friends from being trapped in the void of death he'd created. Kuja's parting words to Zidane is realizing the purpose of living a meaningful life even when it seems pointless. That imminent death isn't an excuse to give up one's life or decide the life of another. Ultimately there was more to life than simply living it for himself and then giving it up to death's despair.
