Love exists, but not in the way we think about it. It is a very complex emotion, and one that doesn't always have a positive connotation. In my experience with it, it mostly consists of pain until mutuality is fulfilled, and even then, there are still situations where the emotion has a negative connotation. As for the animal side of things, it isn't that animals can't feel love, but rather that most non-mammal species and even a few mammals don't possess the parts of the brain required in order to process an emotion like love. That is why your dog may love you, but a reptile couldn't care less unless you had food.
