Speak for yourself when you call the human race pathetic. Also, I highly, highly doubt you'll see anything really significant for several generations as far as augmentation is concerned. What I'd look more at is the sooner to come AI singularity, which is much more likely to happen first and could happen as soon as the next twelve years or so.

Okay. Let's get this straight. Unless there is a way to defy the laws of physics, We will die. Humanity will die out. It's not even a 'oh maybe we won't if we do this', No, We will. It's a fact. Now we may be able to slow our process of time down to such a small factor, it will seem like immortality through artificial reality. However even then, in time the universe itself, will die. If you think our sun is our biggest issue, you have a lot of science to get down. We are, as a universal extinction, are going to either be crushed and melted probably on an atomic level, with a big crunch. OR more likely a big freeze. Where gravity will lose(And as we know this is the more likely of the two.). OR in a few ridiculous amount of zero years, ALL the stars in the universe will die, ALL fuel will be used up, and the only thing left inside the universe will be blackholes which as you probably know, isn't very habitable. In more crass terms. As a immortal physical entity, We are Fucked. Now of course, there are possibilities. Like if we can get out of this universe, MAYBE we'll be able to survive. But that's just a theory. Or maybe we'll be able to make it so gravity is in perfect balance and the universe stays the same, Buuuut even if we don't somehow kill ourselves by screwing it up, The universe's matter is finite, or at least the fuel in it. That being things such as stars ect, like I said before. We'll run out of resources, and then die. I mean I'm all for getting upgrades, Like I made a joke with my brother not three days ago, We're already up to the point with 8k tv's we won't really fully be able to tell the full difference due to our eyes not being able to, So in the future, You're going to have upgrade your eyes, so you can watch your upgraded tvs! But I'm not so arrogant to think that we'll be unlocking the secrets of the universe. On a physical level, We can die literally every second, of every day(on a planetary scale.) In dozens of ways, without ever even seeing what kills us coming. And that's just the things we know about. And let's just assume the A.I. we make won't kill us. While I don't believe it's a fact A.I. will try to murder us, And that it can be good, I also believe it's possible for it not to be. And if a true A.I. wanted us dead. It would be able to succeed. It's very unlikely we'll ever get out of our solar system.
