I think its WAAAAY too early in the human development to be having this conversation. We've only started taking our baby steps as far as the rest of life on this planet that predates us is concerned. Lets, as human 1.0, learn and take some god damn responsibility for our actions, our toys, and our existence first. THEN we could focus on and prepare for cosmic events that won't happen for a very long time from now.

By all means, I'm curious as to what you consider downsides in natural evolution. It by no means is a perfect system, but I'm not sure putting our faith in a flawed creature's image of perfection is any better.

Yeah, but that's one of those things that sounds better on paper than it actually would be. Perfection in and of itself is a paradox, and the pursuit of it, while a worthy goal, may do more harm than good. The perfection that a super advanced AI may achieve may be perceived as flawed to the AI that came before it, Tyranny to the AI that predates that one, and pure evil to humanity 1.3. Now, you do raise some good points though, and I actually agree with you that, like it or not, we're going down that road. But I think its a bit too hasty to go down that road before we're finished mapping and understanding cognitive sentience. Or understanding how electrons work. We may get an early start on creating humanity 1.3, only to discover in doing so, we're stifling an untapped function in the mind of 1.0's brain in how it puts reality together that could take us further. What happens to 1.3? They've just been rendered obsolete. Is it right to delete them in the name of cold progress? Do they become a slave race? What if they decide they want to stay, and are willing to fight us to keep their place in the world?
Humans are kinda in a unique place in the world. The fact that we can choose to do these things to our species is incredible, and I actually am optimistic about it. I just think we'd be trading one set of problems for another, and we should be careful what doors we shut permanently. Even artificial evolution may meet some dead ends, and we need to make sure we can move backwards if we need to.

1! I hate how this site is repeating my comments
2. Yes, this is not to be rushed or made into an extremist faction with the only motive is to push the extinction of man 1.0 to death but to be the most precise and adaptive creature we can be. As Charles Darwin said “It is not the strongest of the species that survives, nor the most intelligent that survives. It is the one that is the most adaptable to change.” We need to adapt to nature but most importantly our selves. You hit the puppy in the head when you said: "Perfection in and of itself is a paradox, and the pursuit of it, while a worthy goal, may do more harm than good." Good observation and this is what I want to see. Yes, the point is not to rush blindly and to evaluate our selves but also not to be to slow. There is a goldilocks zone that must be achieved and it must come at a cost which we must all agree.
This is out if of our hands today and all we can do is except that someday man as we know it will no longer exist due to some event naturally or by our own hands as creators.
"I know you won't believe me, but the highest form of Human Excellence is to question oneself and others." - Socrates. As long as mankind can do this I feel that whatever path it takes it will be of no regret as it dealt with the cards it had. Think and think of not but your self but of others and most importantly what they do.
