"Why Are Fat People Ridiculed In Anime?"

I didn't read the article because I'm ill because It's abit too dense to read atm but to add to Lamby. There is a saying in Japan "The nail that sticks out get's hammered down" to put paint with a broad brush, being anything other than Normal or Average in Japan is consider disruptive to school or working environment, to be less or more than that is generally consider rude or selfish. When confronting on someones "Insensitivity" with them or with a superior they are generally given the response of "I don't really know if it is" or "I don't really know" which is the motto of your everyday Japanese beta male; Japan has no shortage of those. There were only just anti-bullying laws implemented in 2017 that protects LGBT students. In regards to anime though it's seems the medium is more progressive it comes LGBT but little in the way representing any "fat" characters where their isn't just a gag, occasionally it's just ignored and accepted as apart of the character design, but never anything interesting being said. Might be due to how Anime and Manga are tools of escapism and coupled with Japan's timid self deprecating social outlook we are never shown a pov of someone of a large stature. Instead the stories we get are about fantastical events in which a fat character loses their weight and becomes the most popular kid at school as way of wish fulfillment but even in those cases the fat is still played as a gag. In LGBT stories the fantasy is that of overcoming the struggles in society, being accepted for who they are and having happy endings. I think the fundamental reason for such a strange (at least from a western viewpoint) juxtaposition of representation is that people who are LGBT want to be LGBT and it's quite rare to find anyone who wants to be "Fat". It's a surreal observation to make where in the western world where being PC is a big part of our culture and it encompasses all aspect of deflecting negativity (For better or for worse). Maybe theres something to said or seen by that, I dunno. I hope I added to thread in some way. Well that's the end of that tangent that nobody asked for or wanted. I am going back to my burrito blanket.

As someone who's a little chubby myself but also likes to use fat jokes in a non-hostile, playful manner - I just want to be serious and say it's not cool to make fun of someone for their weight problem and it never was. I personally don't understand why people do that kind of thing but I can understand obesity is an issue that people who have it need to deal with. Society should positively reinforce the idea of losing weight (which thankfully a lot of people do) rather than torment them until they stop eating altogether. It's like racism and homophobia, we should be past it by now but I guess some people just want an excuse to be complete dicks to others to get their laughs.

https://tonic.vice.com/en_us/article/neq3ak/people-called-me-fat-in-china "If someone’s coming from an East Asian cultural background, they tend to have an underlying philosophical foundations of Confucianism. In the case of a woman, one of your major roles is to support the familial lineage by giving birth. Technically, your job is to be physically fit enough to be a healthy vessel to produce as many heirs as you can” Not only in East Asia, but also in other places across the world;however our people are just more blunt.Fat guys are teased as well.

I mean, could have something to do with the fact that obesity is linked to cancer. :)
