Would you date someone with a bad history/emotional background?

jethex
been there, done that. I agree with panda, but don't think it's easy to be that "light"

I don't think you should see yourself as the person who fixes everything. Relationships are not meant to fix each other. Relationships work when you accept each other and are prone to failure when you try to change each other. Yet, if your partner wants to change something about themselves, you should accept that too. Giving a partner a task is the worst thing you can do in a relationship, but it's often the case e.g. "make me happy/take the pain away"

@misunderstood no it isnt an easy task at all i have been there before. it takes time honestly for them let you in. but it the person is worth it why not?

I would definitely date someone that has a bad history or emotional problems. I understand the pain and being loved really helps with it.

Well, I have/am. Depression counts. But, you really have to weigh if a relationship is the healthy thing for the both of you. All to often people assume a relationship will fix their problems, but if anything, it adds stress no matter how good it may seem. Relationships take a lot of work and if you already have a heavy work load, why add to it? Really, it just depends on how the person can handle it. I can't judge another for what they've been through, only how they've been since I've known them and I certainly can't compare their experiences to that of my own since we all experience even the same things in different ways. *Pro tip* Relationships aren't a fix all and it's never fair to you or your partner to expect that it will solve all of your problems. If you can't be happy being single, you aren't ready to be in a relationship.

I've done it in the past. Maybe thats why I am looking for someone who at least knows how to smile at herself in the mirror now. Actually, I think I might have a harder time dating someone who had an angelic past. I mean its one thing to play the part of an open minded individual, but to truly be able to empathize and relate to the problems of others on a human level, you need to have been exposed to it either personally, or second hand through someone very close to you. For the latter example, I've never smoked, drank, or done drugs, but I've been exposed to the scene enough times to know how to talk someone down from a bad trip. In that same way, even if I've never had a panic attack, I know how to help people navigate them. I wouldn't be able to do either of these things if the people in my life who had been to those places were merely casual acquaintances. I mean I would try to help, but unless I actually sat down with someone and explored the experience thoroughly, I don't think it would be of much use. And maybe somewhere in the back of my mind, I might even be judging them. ________________________________ @Sirubu: Well, I'm inclined to answer no, but there are such thing as certain low functioning psychopaths who would be dangerous to be in a relationship with. I wish there was a better way to put that.
