Older Otaku (if they exist)

gamerblue
I often come to terms with the fact I missed the glory years of Otakudom years ago and am one of the few single Otaku at my age (30). Are there any out there like me? (sure doesnt seem like it at cons or even on this site!!!)

We exist, we're just well hidden xD. I'm 23 (which I dun think is old, but older than the general otaku population v.v).

I think I speak on behalf of all the Otaku elders, that some of us never grow out of our otakudom. I still cosplay and work with FUNimation at AnimeBoston and NYAF/NYCC...and no, the Dante wig is NOT my actual hair color!

I was wondering about that too. How do you go from a hardcore otaku with tons of DVD's mangas and costumes and years of conventions, to seemingly not caring about it any more? Is it just a phase for most people, or is the world full of older Anime closet cases?

Well I guess I'm with you guys! Though I'm 27 and that's not really an "old otaku" by Japanese standards. But, why? Is otakudom more a passing teenage-obsession kind of thing in the West? The first generation of Otakus in Japan are entering their 50s and their population is pretty big not to mention their continuing influence on the whole anime/manga scene. Every time I'm at Comic Market I see lots of people that are over 30 along with hardcore teenage Doujin freaks that buy so many doujin that they have to pack em at the spot and send them home through mail :)

As Madarame from the manga Genshiken once said: "You don't choose to become an otaku, you realize that you have become one after the fact." I don't think its something you "grow out of" - it's life man. Otaku is life.

Cheers mates!

I consider myself old(23) since most cons are full of 16-17 year olds.

Believe me this otaku didn't grow out of it. It starts out with a few anime and manga and grows and grows. I am probably the oldest one here at 40. And zepdread is right, it is life.

This otaku didn't grow out of it. I started almost 20 years ago and just ended up an otaku. You don't grow out of it.
