@swadian Like I said. It really depends where you live. If you lived in Zeta controlled territory. Los Zetas didn’t give a fuck. But they are the exception. Not the general rule. You make it seem as if all cartels kidnap foreigners. Which is not true. Each cartel has different rules and policies that they apply to their own territory. But I know that there is “cobro de piso” in Michoacan. I could ignorantly say that every single cartel hace “cobro de piso.” But that is simply not true. Each cartel works slightly different. Some cartels do extort local business, while other cartels do not extort local business. Your kidnapping argument stems from the anecdotal experience that you’ve had. Then generalizing that anecdotal experience to every other cartel. Of course, there is always exception to the rule. But cartels usually leave foreigners alone. Tell me, how to you explain so many expat communities in Mexico? Expat communities in the Yucatan peninsula, Puerto Vallarta, Cabo San Lucas, San Miguel de Allende, etc. If kidnapping foreigners is such a big business. The cartels could easily go into these communities and start kidnapping people. But they don’t. Why? https://i.ani.me/0327/2911/grey.jpg Oh, I know of someone that got kidnapped. I asked for data. Not your anecdotal experience. Listen, you’re not really going to convince me with anecdotal evidence. You are just one data point. One data point is statistically insignificant. That’s not me being sarcastic. Imagine a hypothetical person. Someone that grew up in the roughest neighborhoods of the US. Like deep in the hood. This hypothetical person lived their entire life in the most violent parts of US. How would that shape their world view of the US? This person might think that the US is the most violent and dangerous country. Then let’s say that someday this hypothetical person moved out of the US. While outside of the US. Some other X person wants to migrate to the US. Person X ask the hypothetical person. How was it living in the US? The hypothetical person through their lived experience. Answers that you shouldn’t live in the US. Because the US is a dangerous extremist country. You’ll be like hold up? Isn’t there a selection bias? Yes, there is. Just because its dangerous to live a certain area of the US doesn’t mean that the entire US is dangerous. You have the same exact selection bias Swan. Just because certain parts of Mexico are dangerous. Full of cartel kidnappings. Doesn’t mean that the entire nation suffers from kidnapping. Like I said. How do you explain so many expat communities in Mexico. Some places in Mexico are safer than the safest parts of the US. Like around the Yucatan peninsula. The city of Merida. Which is starting to attract a lot of expats. According to CEOworld magazine’s security index. Merida is safer than the safest city in the US. But if I was to use your own selective bias where cartels are attracted to people that don’t speak Spanish very well. Merida should by your own reasoning be a hotspot for kidnapping foreigners. Yet it isn’t. Neither is Puerto Vallarta, Cabo San Lucas, San Miguel de Allende, Mexico city etc. But keep generalizing your anecdotal experience to the entire country. Listen, bring me data where most of the cartel kidnappings or at least a good plurality is done to foreigners. Like I said anecdotal evidence is really just one data point. You might make general statements about a single data point. But I don’t. I need a huge cluster of data to draw any meaningful conclusion.

@swadian Privilege? Personas ke he conocido desde mi infancia. It never ends well. If you live in certain parts of Mexico. You might see some fucked up shit. I’ve seen some fucked-up shit. You’ve seen some fucked-up shit. No, I do not. I always move forward. I could easily say through my own anecdotal experience that all of Mexico is dangerous. If you’re a foreigner. You’re going to get kidnapped wherever you go. But that is simply not the case. I don’t apply selective bias of the places where I lived, to the entire nation. And yes, since you mentioned Michoacan. I would live in certain places of Michoacan. Just because some parts of Michoacan are dangerous doesn’t mean the entire state is dangerous. I’ll probably live in one of the coastal towns or even in Morelia. But hey, keep generalizing your anecdotal experience to an entire state or the entire nation. Keep living in that selective bias. Keep that non privileged victim complex. Keep living in fear. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vn-wHNfzjEo . https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=b-Mj0BbUlns If you want to add anything else. I’ll let you have the last word on this topic.

As far as my brother was concerned he managed to pass in and out of Mexico without problem. He knew some Spanish which helped, but he was in his college years and prone to getting into trouble. I know he spoke of his friends and him being heavy into the party scene and waking up hungover from drinking the next morning on a beach. Then years later as a truck driver he'd make deliveries for various companies across the borders. He'd probably agree that yes it isn't too bad to go into most areas of the country, but that it absolutely is beneficial to understand some of the native languages used throughout each region. This of course does not say that crime isn't rampant in certain cities or towns.

Parallel to this of course America has violent kidnappings and gang activities too. Richmond, Virginia was known nationally as murder capital of the Nation for a fair time despite Virginia predominantly being a rather peaceful state. Except that time in college when my friend's roommate had his head bashed in coming back to the apartment from the bar. Or that time I had my own car's windows blown out from a drive-by as I was heading into work. Or this other time an ex coworker and former classmate tried to induct me into his own drug dealing business before they got busted. That person was let go after a plea deal where he dropped the blaim on another classmate he had ropped into his hustle. Or this other other time... Point being trouble comes in many forms and where we least expect it.

Most violent cities in the world, Mexico has the lead ;') and the cherry on the top of the cake? Our government is so corrupt that a fraction of the homicides are of course hidden under the rug.

Richmond has dropped its rankings in recent decades, but another city known as Petersburg ranks now at number 2 in the United States. Detroit, Michigan still keeping up there on the leaderboards. Don't know what's been going down in Missouri lately. See they're now number 1.

Even then I still love to go bowling in Petersburg whenever I get the chance, haha! There is even a great historic district to check out with plenty of dinning options if you don't mind ducking bullets between sips of your afternoon sweet southern tea!
