So obviously spending time with someone is the best way to get to know someone, meeting someone on this site and just messaging them dosnt seem very effective unless you really start to hit it off from the start, this goes with making a friend or trying to find a significant other. You just cant really get a feel for a person that well through some messages I believe, and I dont think meeting up with someone you just met is a good or even a possible option.
I think finding some other way to spend time and interact with someone is needed in most cases, now im gonna make a wild guess and assume the majority of us enjoy anime to some extent. But even with that in common with someone, watching anime with someone isn't the most interactive thing you could do, yeah it could work with some, watch anime and then have a conversation but i dont think its for everybody.
If you couldn't tell from the title, I think a good option that a good amount of people on this site are in to is gaming, depending on the game it could be really good to engage with someone, you stop worrying as much about being embarrassed or shy trying to start a conversation because you'll also be focusing on the game and it'll be easier for you to come out of your shell or get over those initial jitters.
So basically, I think finding a game that you could play with someone is one of the best ways to get to know them and start a friendship or something more.
This is all my opinion, I dont post alot, and my thoughts are kinda all spread out so this may not be the most clear or easy to read.
If you would like to ask a question just let me know.

If ya only like single player games than ya either have to try some multiplayer, or this method just isnt for you. Something you could try is playing the same singl eplayer game and just converse about it as you play.
Main point of this was to just try and give another method that wasnt looking at someones favorite anime and basing it off of there which I gotta say really dosnt seem the most effective.

Definitely, my coworker met one of his ex's playing World of Warcraft, they tanked together. I've made some of my best friends from that game as well, raiding with the same people for about 6 years can do that. XD

That's why I always take my time when meeting and talking to people, I get to know them bit by bit and when I feel we've gotten to know each other a fair amount I often suggest adding them on something like Steam or Skype so we can talk to each other and probably play a game together. Games like Warframe, Left 4 Dead 2, Garry's Mod and what-not make great bonding experiences if you ask me. I met one of my trans friends on Youtube and we started playing Warframe together along with her brother and we became great friends from all those void runs; we're planning on properly getting back into it especially with all the new content added.

Yep, most relationships or friendships originating from this site I would imagine to be long distance, or just online for the time being. There are just much better ways to bond and get to know someone in person by going out and just hanging in general. Online, it isnt as easy and I think just being in a skype call with someone while ya take down hordes of infested in Warframe, its just fun and a easy way to start to get to know someone.

Playing games is a good way to interact better. My brother made friends during his gun game trolling on COD. Really, trolling on games run in the family. My cousins do it, brothers do it, even I do it and it's not just trolling on COD but any game we find amusing to mess around in. I've made a friend on Steam after a match with them in Naruto Ninja Storm 3: Full Burst.
