I've been wondering about this for awhile. It seems to me that a lot of the LGBTQ folk I've met have been mostly nerds and geeks- I'm talking sci-fi, fantasy, anime, tech, gaming, and academics. I'm sure curious as to why this is.
Does one's sexual orientation and gender have a significant correlation with their hobbies? Or are just otaku/nerds more accepting of alternative lifestyles?
I'm just wondering.
But on the other hand, I've seen gay athletes and jocks, both male and female, so I dunno

I'm going to assume now it's going to be a similar percentage to the general population that are LGBT.

Being that people in this culture tend to be more liberal and open-minded, they are more likely to voice their sexual preference than most, so it just seems that way.

I've noticed a lot of people in the community going bi but not so much full homosexual. I hung out with one guy recently who said he used to be into straight/yuri stuff but that just got kind of boring so he started exploring traps/shorta and went from there.

I wouldn't say its more prevalent just that marginalized groups tend to group together easier.

I don't think they're more prevalent in geek culture nor do I think hobbies have any correlation to one's sexual orientation, I reckon there's an equal amount of homosexual people in pretty much all cultures. I guess it's because geek culture is more accepting and less judgmental than other cultures so people tend to feel more comfortable with their sexuality and have no problems expressing that about themselves and I think that's a great thing.

I don't think it's more prevalent in geek culture or that it has any correlation to hobbies either. The only point I'm more different about is that I don't particularly think that geek/nerd culture is all that more accepting and nonjudgemental compared to most other cultures, but that's really another topic, lol.

As others have stated, it's not that it's more prevalent, it's that it's more forwarded. As a classification, nerds and geeks have been ostracized by many other "normal" groups. (I define normal as in the eye of the beholder, and I don't mean the D&D game.) The LGTBQ is another one of those isolated groups, and so I'd guess that, as groups that have experienced being outcast, it's far easier to welcome others, especially from other groups that have also been left out. Thus, there is the perception of it being more of a cross-section.
