I think it's good to use open ended questions more so than yes/no answer questions. That's always kinda been my pet peeve online, getting yes/no questions because it doesn't really allow for any other followup other than more yes/no questions and then yes/no answers. This is good both online and in real life. In terms of real life, I think it's also important to watch both yours and the other person's body language. About 65-75% of all communication is nonverbal, so you might be communicating to others that you're a bit creepy when you're not just based off body language alone and the other person can also communicate whether or not they're open to conversation based on their body language. It's also a way to judge how well the conversation is going
