Hmm... well, you just have to work on your confidence with strangers, then :) So in other words, keep talking to strangers until you no longer feel shy doing it :D lol Easier said then done, I know, but hey, better than nothing :)

I wouldn't worry so much about what you open with. Most people, women for the sake of a flirting example, don't remember what men first said to them. I knew someone who'd open with something like Hey, you're tall! and walk off with that woman's number and/or that person for the night. You just gotta be confident and well, charming I suppose, and it'll be fine

No, not necessarily fail :) You might act a bit shy, but that isn't the same as failing. The easiest way to approach someone is to be like, "Hi, my name is ____, what's yours?" or "I couldn't help but notice _______"
