@wei_ying you don't truly need the books to play, they're just useful as beginner stories to help get you into the hang of it, or if someone just wants a a traditional take on DnD. Also yes, it's dnd, pretty much anything is allowed. Like my friend who has a Goblin barbarian, who's not really a barbarian. He just runs around in his underwear and we had to call him "Super Dad Tighty Whitey" or else he'd assault our characters, usually killing them because he had made Super Dad Tighty Whitey OP. But the only real thing you'd need is a full set of dice, or a dice roller app, you can get character sheet apps too. Which you can create a character and keeps track of your characters inventory, level, stats etc. Other than that, if the Dm has a good imagination, you're set. My friends don't play for any sort of status. Just to torture each other with stupid and absurd things. Like an evil Warlock who could one shot pretty much anything by throwing a chair. And me dodging a thrown chair, only for my friend to get hit by it and ultimately die.
