Find a genre/style of anime/manga that you like that you'd never expect?

When I was younger I had been a huge fan of over the top action animes, giant robots, comedies, and stuff along the lines of Pokemon and Digimon. As time went on I became interested in more action and adventure stuff, but I found myself enjoying 3 other styles of anime and manga: sports, food, and psychological dramas. The sports series all started with Inazuma Eleven my freshman year of college and I've loved it ever since branching off with Kuroko no Basuke (which is now one of my favorite series), Haikyu, and Last Inning. I love cooking/baking and my passion for it was ignited by the Food network and other reality food shows my sophomore year of college. It transferred over to anime and manga too with Toriko and Shokugeki no Soma (which is REALLY getting good and it's only 25 chapters in). Lastly, I love anything that makes me question anything and everything about the plot and characters and thus I'm really into psychological thrillers or anything that revolves around using your brain. Life is Money and Phi Brain: Kami no Puzzle are two examples of this. So what about you guys? Anything you've read that you've read or watched that you wouldn't expect to like and ended up liking and or loving it?

Ah, gender benders... fun times there. XD One of the first mangas that I ever read was actually Ranma 1/2 and that's a prime example right there.

Historical and Mecha. .__.

Mecha series are definitely awesome. I've always been a fan of Gundam, Gurren Lagann, Code Geass, and Power Rangers/Super Sentai, so I definitely support them. Historical series can be really cool too. :)

Ecchi and Fanservice. When I first started getting into anime I hated and thought it was weird but I watched stuff like Highschool of the Dead and Girls Bravo and really liked it.

I never thought I'd like shojo, particularly romance, especially as other romance venues STILL annoy the crap out of me, but for some reason I dived head-first into romantic manga and anime. I also like multi-theme shojo. I'll give an example: Crimson Hero, the manga, is technically a sports manga (volley ball) but it has a huge streak of romance in it. I also got heavily into cyberpunk, like Ghost in the Shell and Appleseed.

Same here when i was young its always battle/action but as i grew older i tried different genre i want to challenge myself on more mature thats why i read Seinen it was Berserk the first seinen series i read this where i start to love the Character development, plot/story more than battle i also like to read dark shounen like HxH.....and the best plot driven narrative series i read is 20th century boys and the series titled Monster is the best manga ever IMO.....but honestly im still a battle loving fan i just love battles though as a reader i want to read something interesting
