junji ito has some good ideas here and there in his stories, but is over all overrated and should stick to short stories tomie is his only good work and only because its a collection of short stories, and even then theyr extremely hit or miss

You know what was scarier than either? While on the phone with a very pissed customer I suddenly felt the thunder down under that only a sick man knows. I made it in time but it was close and scary. This just happened.

@momoichi I can agree. Japanese horror movies are generally involve Japanese folk stories and that is usually lost outside of Japan. Now Korea is amazing at movies, but the only real good example I can think of is Train To Busan which is arguably the best zombie movie ever made. American horror has been kind of stupid for the last decade or so, the only good horror movie I argue is Annihilation. The 80s and 90s were the single best time for horror I be thinking. We had The Thing (1982), Return of the Living Dead (1985), Se7en (1995) among a good 20 or 30 more. Not sure if you have seen it, but there is only one movie that actually scared me. Jacob's Ladder (1990), that movie alone is capable of giving somebody an existential crisis for months.

aahh~ i love typing out a detailed response and then accidentally clicking off and its deleted~ mai use to save your response if you clicked back, but now it doesnt~~ @chocopyro imo jump scares can be done well as long as they arent just loud sounds or jarring camera panning. an affective jump scare is one where they build up the tension and then release it by the monster/ghost appearing suddenly. (my biggest gripe with the insidious films is they didn't need those blaring sounds when a jump scare happened, it was scary enough on its own and just ended up hurting my ears) @hell_hound7 bullshit. name a single asian horror film that is scarier than heredity @dyadka_yar i mean i know a lot about Japanese folk lore and culture, but the scares themselves just arent scary. i watched noroi the other day and it just wasn't scary. i maybe flinched back twice the entire film (it had a really good plot and don't get me wrong though). japanese horror is much slower, but it doesn't take that time to build any real suspense. it seems more focused on building a story then it is with using that story to strike fear or even unease. Ringu was better then the ring, but i cant even say it was scarier. this is also probably an unpopular opinion among horror fans, but the older horror films just arent scary. theyr good films, and i absolutely adore the unique and creative practical effects (which will always be scarier than any cgi abomination that totally kills any immersion) i just dont think theyr scary. slashers and zombie movies were never really scary because theyr too removed from reality. ghosts, however, have a plausible believability because they themselves are by concept allusive and mysterious. people really believe ghosts exist, but no one is going to believe that zombies are going to burst through your window or some juggernaut is going to kill you. i cant even say that iv been spoiled by modern horror because i grew up watching those shitty scifi scary movies.
