The Common Argument: Dub vs Sub

I am very partial to the dubs. I don't speak Japanese so I can relate better to the characters when they are speaking English. Anything with Christ Sabat, Justin Briner, Bryce Papenbrook my fave English dub voice actors.

sometimes I like subs, sometimes dub there are dubs which (imo) are better than the subs at time Death Note DBZ Full Metal Alchemist plus at times it's a bit easier to follow listening to dubs and don't really have to pay that much attention to the screen where as subs I have to focus 100% in order not to miss anything but then there are times where the dub doesn't land and sometimes or mostly you can feel the emotion in the original so there are pros and cons to each for me I just try to be open minded about it and not be too critical

I personally think this is a more interesting topic most would realize. If you want to be super technical you cannot just simply say subs vs dubs, you have to be more specific with what kind of subs and dubs. Generally speaking if most people saying they like subs or dubs are actually saying they like localization of foreign media and not simple translations. Localizations are exactly what they sound like. it is when the media is rewritten to tailor a different audience keeping some of the basic elements from the original. These are Japanese kindergarten name badges. In Japan kindergarten students have to wear these at all times. Now you see this is an example of something that might not mean much to an audience outside of Japan. However under the initial cultural context, this item actually holds much more significant meaning as many Japanese look at these and have fond memories. In a localization because it isn't important to the rest of the world it gets removed or is downplayed in both localized dubs and subs. Even though this item is actually important for emphasizing things in terms of symbolism or just wanting the audience to think back to being in kindergarten again which further adds to whatever else may be happening in the story. So when it comes to localization, the story does end up being drastically different if you do not know all the fine tune bits of Japanese culture. To us it may not seem that way since the general synopsis of a story is still the same no matter what. But for more of the smaller things, as I learn more about them I find myself appreciating the intended story telling even more. At the end of the day, entertainment is entertainment and however you enjoy it the best is how you should consume it. I just find these things interesting as I continue to study the culture and language. But going back to the main prompt. We shouldn't really be asking ourselves subs vs dubs... it's more like localized or non-localized translations. Personally I say non-localized since I want to experience the media the way it was intended, but that is just me.
