What do you look for in an Anime Protag?

zk55
When finding new anime what qualities do you look for in the protagonist(s), personally i tend to look more towards the quieter kind characters, or the ones with a dark past

I just don't want him to be a pussy.

If I'm supposed to admire them or something but they're just overpowered and that's just it, like it's a power fantasy for people I guess? I mean some characters are overpowered but they fight impossible odds (Guts) or fight powerful foes (Kenshin) or their strength is funny (Saitama) or it's part of the plot (Aang). But then some are just ridiculously overpowered for no reason other than they are the protagonist so they must be the strongest and they're likely the protagonist because they are the strongest. Protagonist need to be stronk and be able to beat everyone right? Even worse if it gets to mary sue level... Also if they're annoying or unbearable... ughh... sorry I did the opposite of the thread by stating stuff I'm not looking for but I found it easier to word my opinion this way. I don't look for particular stuff in a protagonist, they can be lots of things.

I usually like a protagonist that actually sticks to their morals and ideals. Ironically I admire it more when they go off the rails yet somehow always find a way back to themselves cause that is obviously much harder yet more amazing to do in my opinion.

Someone relatable, mature and strong-willed to carry the series
beherit
Reasonably skilled when starting off, not cartoonishly perverted, not too much of a goody-two shoes, doesn't have a harem, doesn't have too much of an obnoxious personality, strong-willed, confident, committed, principled, but not stagnant.
hakutaku
a real human who has shortcomings and advantages!Imperfections are acceptable!
st_dantry
A thoughtful character. One who thinks about his actions and can reflect on their behaviour. Doesnt take things on face value.

I like proactive protagonists with personalities of their own, rather than milquetoast self inserts. Although Delinquent protagonists are also a personal favorite in any medium. Even romantic comedies. (Like Midori Days and D-frag.) In action and fighting animes, it's nice to have characters who are strong, but still need to struggle or spend time improving to get somewhere. In slice of life animes, it's fun to have a protag who isn't well adapted to the life he/she is currently living. And obviously, stoicism is amazing if done right, but even Guts is a dynamic character. So stoic in no way means a character needs to have the stagnant personality of a rock.
