The interior was dimly lit with a large fire place being the main source of luminescence and heat. Veruca could make out the familiar figures of Manga Bird and Sherflow at a table. Manga Bird was wearing a pleated purple dress and her blond hair flowed down her back. The fair-haired Sherflow was impeccably dressed, wearing a brown sleeveless under-jacket. At the bar Frost and Panda could be seen conferring loudly with…Arc. Veruca’s heart thumped a little louder when she spotted him. She had no time to think about his presence though because Oceanic tugged at her sleeve and led her to the small stage. Our protagonist wildly waved her hands and said “Oh no! Do you want me to perform with you on that stage?”. “Of course Veruca,” the musician said while regarding her with bright eyes, “I wouldn’t have it any other way. This will give you a moment to forget about your cares and cut loose.” Oceanic half dragged her on to the stage while announcing with vigour to the “crowd”, “Tonight we’ll be having a guest appearance by none other than Veruca! Please join me in welcoming her to the stage!”. A warm and fervent applause broke out among all the patrons present. Veruca reticently stayed on the stage. She gave a quick glance in Arc’s direction hoping to gauge his reaction. He gave her an encouraging smile and an almost imperceptible nod. Panda and Frost gave wolf whistles and shouted encouragement. Sherflow and Manga Bird politely clapped hands. Veruca drew strength from this cheering on by her friends. Oceanic was getting herself ready for the performance when she suddenly retrieved a piece of paper from her pocket which she gave to Veruca. Written in neat handwriting on the small square of paper was a song. Oceanic got a music sheet stand and put in front of our protagonist, “Put the page on the stand so that you can read from it freely.”. Veruca followed the minstrel’s advice and put the page on the stand so that it was within her eye line. Veruca was nervously adjusting the stand when she felt a hand on her shoulder. She looked up to see Oceanic standing next to her with her lute already slung over her shoulder, “It will be alright. Remember to have fun.” Oceanic gave one more reassuring squeeze on Veruca’s shoulder and then made her way to the centre of the little stage. Oceanic flew into the song with enthusiasm with our heroine following: I have a tale to tell A man with a heart of a bell His family fell He felt their death knell So raise your glass To the man with brass He set out to avenge his kin To make them pay for their sin With a blade of tin Put the guilty in the bin So raise your glass To the man with brass On the road he saw the ghost Of the one he loved most Said: Return to your post Entreat you not to kill and boast So raise your glass To the man with brass He returned to see A group like a family Poverty stricken-this he could see A patron to them he would be So raise your glass To the man with brass Strength is helping lad and lass Not violence and being an ass It was a simple tune with only the lute and the two voices. The audience had been sitting in rapt silence throughout the song though and the listeners roared their approval when the song was over.
