Ever since I entered college it seems like the main way of hanging out for the majority of my peers includes going to parties to hook up and get drunk. If that's what they enjoy more power to them, but for people like me who aren't into such activities, things get...kind of awkward.
I've gone to a few parties here and there just to be able to spend time with people I haven't seen in a while, but it ends up backfiring on me once people start asking why I'm not drinking with them or say that I look really bored. I've never had a taste for alcohol, and it gets quite exasperating when others try to pressure me into getting a beer for example when I make it very clear I don't drink.
I have caved in in the past but each and every time no matter how little I drink I always manage to get sick for days after it happens. When I tell this to others they almost say that my body's just not used to it yet and proceed to offer me a drink. It really boggles my mind how they feel I should purposely put my body through hell just to,in their minds, "have fun".
It sucks because a lot of good friends I've had previously now spend all their free time getting wasted, and it really puts on a strain on the relationship. Has anyone else had experiences like this, and if so, how did you handle them?

I'm also not really into drinking. I've had quite a few and each time all i could think was "what's the big deal, why do a lot of people feel the need to have it?"
you just have to find some people who can at least understand and accept your preference. i only have like a few true friends that accept me and won't pressure me into something and won't get mad or question anything.

Can't stand the stuff, or what it does to people for that matter. I can't even much stand the smell of alcohol.
It's like a drug for people who don't want to admit they need drugs in their life.

Every college party either has drugs or alcohol. Im not that into drinking but I still do it excessive but not often. As far as friends go were pretty much near the end of college and some have finished. None of us really party like that any more. Trust me once reality and real life or rather the real world hits you in the face after college you'll stop trust me.

soulxiii, I agree, I feel the same. I'm just waiting for people to grow out of this, it's got to happen sooner or later. P: I mean if you want to have a drink on a night out I get it, just, if I'm trying to have a conversation with you I'd prefer it if you aren't completely wasted.

Personally I like experimenting with different types of alcohol. I sell the stuff as my part-time job. I understand your frustration with alcohol being the crux of many parties. I've had times where my friends were over and they just get wasted. They just end up babbling and doing stupid things, but I never want to take it that far. I don't understand drinking to the point where you don't remember what you did.
There are so many different kinds of wine and beer in the world that has an amazing, pleasant taste. It's sad to see you were probably offered the lower tier stuff. I'm concerned that you said it makes you feel sick for days. That's definitely not a normal thing that should happen. It can't be an allergy from sulfates since you got sick from beer. For some reason it's not processing correctly in your liver. Even if you had no tolerance the worst that should happen is that you would just get drunk easier. If I were you, I'd ask a doctor about it next time you are in. You may be allergic to fermented drinks.

I was always a light drinker as it is hard on my stomach. Like Arc said if you feel ill for extended periods of time after consuming it is likely an allergy. Ask you doctor to do an allergy screening.

I'm a drinker. Its not so much a drug for me, because I don't ever get drunk drinking. Its entirely because I like the taste of the wine, beer etc. I drink. Fermented drinks are great in terms of flavour and I believe alcohol is not a drug - unlike marijuana or tobacco it had an actual beneficial purpose - alcohol preserved drinks since water is easily contaminated, and alcohol makes it so bugs and bacteria and microbes cannot live inside, so its a safety thing. I believe that it has a place, both culturally and historically. I do not advocate drunkeness or drinking and driving. If you go out, GET A FUCKING CAB like I do.

I totally feel you. I've never really seen the appeal honestly. When I was in university I hung out people that drank excessively and it was awkward for me, to say the least. But to each their own, I guess.
I think if not drinking is something you feel is right for you, you just need to stick to your guns. You might also want to think about who you choose to surround yourself with. Imo, a good friend won't make you feel pressured or guilty about the choices you make.
