What would you do?

The craziest thing happened yesterday evening. So I was on a walk with my dog (far away from home) and I saw a stray dog running around in the middle of the street. Now being an owner of a dog, I couldn't possibly comprehend losing my dog or letting him get injured. So I chased that dog down for an hour or 2, I'm being dead serious right now. That tiny dog ran as fast and as long as a wolf would. After chasing after that dog for hours (about 2 or so) I had finally gotten him cornered in a doorway of a far away house. Exhausted... Right away I called the nearest dog shelter and had them bring someone who could take the dog there. After they evaluated his microchip, they called the dog's owner and they told me today that the owners found out that there was a hole in their backyard fence that their dog had dug and that's how he escaped. And today they picked up their dog and escape proofed their whole house. You don't know how happy and proud that makes me :) Now how would you have handled this situation? BTW my dog had a blast chasing that dog down with me :D

I think you're way seemed to be the best way to handle it, I was in a similar situation, except I was trying to save some baby ducks, it was over in a few mins, but seriously good on you, I think you did a great thing, I can't think of a better way to handle it Ace.

Well, you had the time to do it. A lot of people might not have spent that long chasing after a stray, and it's hard to say where the dog has been. Obviously it was a happy ending here, but usually I'd probably just call animal control and try to meet up with them and let them know where the dog is.

I'll most-likely be considered an ass, but... Not my dog, not my problem.

I probably would have done the same thing as you. This is coming from a guy who pulled off to the side of the highway in 96 degree weather, back to the asphalt for an hour, to dig a hiding kitten from under my car. That kitten now pees in the toilet without training. Worth it.

To be honest I probably would not chase a dog for so long, however if it was near me / in my garden I would hold it until it can be picked up by animal control. I remember once I left my door open on a hot day and a random Staffordshire bull terrier appeared in my house, took like 3 hours for someone to collect it. Turns out it had escaped from a couple of streets over and been running through gardens. It got reunited with its owners the next day.

Ahaha this is me like every two weeks. If I see a stray dog, I have to check up on it. I normally take it to the vet closest to where I found it, because vets can normally scan for microchips. If there's no microchip, I go around to all the houses in the area and ask if they are missing a dog/know who the owner is. If I still can't find the owner, I take it home and hang up posters on signposts. If no one turns up after that, well.. it seems I'd be acquiring a new dog. :P
