I think you do have me beat. XD
Hmm. Interesting perspective. I do understand what you mean considering there are a good number of romantic comedy shows that are popular both in anime and in drama which usually the main character stays with the female in the end. Yet there are times where the main character will want a female partner but never get one in the end. I think there are a good amount of shows where there is a lone main character that does not need any female companionship an example is an anime called Mushishi. It is about a lone guy that studies the species called Mushi and cures people of illnesses caused by them. In no way he is looking for somebody but more trying to help people. Maybe that was not a good example since it is not in a romance genre but either way there are good examples where a person only needs to make a "difference" in order to matter which has nothing to do with having a partner.
I do understand and agree with you. I just think it is closer to what society tells us is right which can be interpreted as what you said about "ideals we grow up with". I think the notion of "relationships are needed" is slowly changing especially with the amount of people single currently than there was a few years ago.
As for Nerf Rebelle products, I have to admit I never heard of the product line before you mentioned it. After looking at the products and commercials I have to say it really does represent the different ways to interpret relationships. XD I wonder how those product sells since they should have named them differently but that is me.

Hello there Laura.
I just wanted to tell you that I agree on several points on your response to the forum thread named What's the reason you're single?. More specifically I agree on your viewpoint on how guys and girls act in a high school and college setting. While there are exceptions to those depending on what type of institution one goes through one will still find these situations pop up on a daily basis. Yet the part on "Boys are trained to work, provide and feel entitled while girls are trained to be caring, giving of themselves and the perfect little vessel of morale support" is slowly changing in this generation much more now than before. This is due to the way that we perceive the working force and how we need money to stay alive. Most people think it is easier to focus on a career than looking for a person of the opposite sex. This is part of the "problem" Japan has on their population issue. Anyway, I feel like I am moving to another issue that was not part of the thread. Sorry for the long post.
