This special is set during the Träumend storyline. After Shinku refuses a brooch Jun wanted to give her as a gift, Souseiseki explains Shinku's strange behaviour by telling Jun what had happened a couple of centuries before, when the Rozen Maiden dolls first met.

The story combines the themes of science-fiction, aestheticism, and yaoi. Ai no Kusabi focuses on the love and conflicts between the three main characters, Iason Mink, Riki, and Guy.
