A guy that has insecurities, particularly in appearance, tends to WANT to see something in a girl's behavior, regardless if there's actually anything there. The reality is, most girls, even ones that are hot af, TRY to be polite to ALL guys. So when that girl shows you attention under the notion of politesse, there's this tendency to HOPE her soft demeanor is exclusively towards you. So then her kindness makes that insecure guy feel a little more comfortable... a little more bold... and then the guy tries to turn it into something more. At that point, the girl is forced to withdraw and back up. Then things can turn awkward. Then the insecure guy is back to where he started, wondering why he "wasn't good enough," or worse yet, starts thinking the girl is a bitch for "leading him on." Soon it progresses to overthinking it, leading to anxiety, which, in turn, inevitably leads down one path... "I'm a nice guy, so she must only like assholes." The insecure guy tends to LIVE BY THAT MOTTO, thus his mentality never changes, he never changes, and the cycle repeats with the next girl he meets.
