I didn't know for the longest time, so I when I went for a physical I asked the doctor to type my blood. I'm A+. However, I'm not allowed to donate blood for two reasons. One, I have a heart condition and it's dangerous for me to give blood. Two, I lived in England just before that huge mad cow mess happened. Due to that, the health department has band me, my family, and others like us from ever donating blood. It's kind of stupid I think. I signed up to be an organ donor on my Driver's License in case the worst should happen and someone matching my blood type needed an organ. Then my mother told me that I'm not allowed to be an organ donor because of the mad cow fiasco. *sigh* :/ I want to help.. people refuse to let me.

SheFoxy, It's good enough that you want to help. Have you ever been offered an explanation why you're not allowed to donate, or would like an explanation?

From what I was told is that it's because they are afraid that I may have been exposed to the mad cow virus in some indirect way. They worry that somehow I may carry it in some inert form in my blood stream. Which is totally RIDICULOUS in my opinion! If I was exposed to it or carrying it I THINK I would have shown symptoms by now. We moved away from England when I was 7. That was 22 YEARS AGO! :/ *sigh* Who really knows, right?

Mad Cow disease is very different than most other diseases caused by bacteria, viruses, fungi, etc. because it is caused by a protein called a prion. Prions are normally in the human body, but in the case of Mad Cow it is shaped incorrectly. The bad prion then plays tag with the other prions and turns them into bad prions also. The thing is that this can be an extremely slow process, which can also vary from person to person. Although there isn't much known about this process because it was discovered relatively recently, it is thought that symptoms can start decades later. There also isn't way to know if you have it while you are alive. It is still certainly very unlikely at this point, but it's a precaution to prevent giving it other people. Sorry, this is probably more than you want to know.
