So the U.S. stimulus check specifically DOES NOT count as income, so is not subject to being taxed as such. However, it is considered an advance on your tax return for next year. I have been unable to determine if you have to pay the difference if your return is less than $1,200. Either way, a lot of people who rely on their tax returns (a balance out to overpaying on taxes early) are going to get screwed.

I would honestly recommend putting the stimulus money into a savings account, or some sure fire stocks. That is provided you don't need it to pay some bills immediately. Ironically they want you to go out and buy stuff with it, because that stimulates the economy. But most people are just going to use it to pay down debt or tuck it away, which does not really stimulate much.
