CoV-2 is too transmissible. Peoples' attitudes towards even the simple preventative measures like masking up and social distancing will ensure that it won't go away anytime soon. A scenario where you'll need a shot every year is one of the better outcomes.

Simple measures like masking up and social distancing were never going to make it go away. It was to restrict the reproductive rate of the virus and limit the number of cases.

Even that doesnt help, yes while mask and social distancing is helpful. The common citizen with no prior knowledge on communicable diseases, proper hygiene, or any background on the health industry. They hear what the people in charge say and do just that. But it isnt enough. To stop this EVERYONE has to be educated properly and willing to put forth the measures to contain this. It would have been better if this was contained to one country and we could have stopped it relatively sooner. But with it being this wide scale its hard to coordinate a joint effort to stop it.

Basically this virus isnt going away.

The fact that it also is in different regions, under different environmental conditions would probably mean mutation is inevitable. It will adapt to the environment there, then when that person comes to another country thats basically a new variant and it ravages the already immune population there.
umi_nezumi
Mutation is inevitable simply due to how efficiently it can spread. It's an RNA virus, it's unstable during replication by nature. If it can replicate it will exhibit mutations. If that mutation is helpful it has better odds of passing on that mutation.
