Why is the rate of suicide and mental illness going up?

vezax
With time and generations the mental disorders have also increased, earlier depression was rare but now its common and everywhere.. such factors also contribute to increased suicide rates, and this is especially valid in those societies in which one marries from his own religious group/social group/family relation. Moreover as the population increases overcrowding occurs and that also has a negative effect on mental health. You should look up the experiment 'behavioural sink' to get to know about this further... https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Behavioral_sink

Nowadays, thanks to the development of modern technology and social media, we have been exposed to various suicide cases...To some people, committing suicide is a commonplace thing.Religion no longer plays an important role in people's lives and minds especially in the west. In the past, many people dare not kill themselves because they were worried that they would end up in hell.

In countries where 自殺/suicide can be one subculture, and people who kill themselves may not be blamed...you know...I am referring to Japan...citizens are more likely to resort to suicide when they are pressed/bewildered by LIFE. 武士/侍<bushi/samurai>who were brave enough to kill themselves by 腹切り would be regarded to true heroes and all their faults would be ignored...自殺で謝罪すること.... During WW2, their pilots were trained to destroy you by sacrificing themselves.

Not everybody is interested in finding a higher purpose of life. Many people are just 井底之蛙<the frog in the well>though they live in most developed countries. They imprison themselves in their own worlds and refuse to think about Possibilities.

I think, generally, people aren't very happy these days. There's a study that suggests that men choose deadlier methods.

@MKraft Doubtful, it increases every year. I doubt the statistics are so much more accurate now than 5 years ago.

I believe so too that these things are increasing. Trying to type with a phone before work left my posts a bit lacking so clarification: What I was trying to indicate was that some of the calculated amount might be due to suicides not being identified, not concidered or calculated at all in the past. And I'm now referring to 15-20+ years ago or so. 5-10 years can start to show a trend and it is troubling to say it mildly what we are seeing now. But it can also be considered in the realm of variance as is the case with many things. Just consider that goverments have a period of party/president rule for 4-8 years depending on countries outside of dictators. So those periods are like a section of their own that can either stabilize or destabilize certain things before going the other direction in the next cycle. This kind of thing can create a sense of change to a wrong direction but in the long run can be just seen as a normal thing. Of course we can't just wait and see if things are so called normal changes. It just that we should understand that the rise in something can be a balancing act of a longer period for example. Having less amount of suicides should be a goal and when a trend for increased amount is seen then we definetly need to look into the reasons and find solutions to correct the course. Also what I tried to raise was the idea of growing wealth, changing landscape of interaction, lifestyles, technology etc. These may shift the situation/cause of deaths from starvation, unsafe environment, accidents etc to suicides. Reason is that before the old causes of death might have been eliminating some unstable people from the calculation of suicides. The old causes might have also given chances to the living (f.e. jobs, places to live, food availability etc) which is now more gone in the developed countries. This results to more people with unbalanced minds or less chances for people overall to find their place in the world due to higher amounts of competion among the living. It might then mean that a certain amount of suicide percentage of the population was always there (which is seen now as a part of the increase) for a economic and social landscape that we have now, but back in the old days it was not seen due to other factors masking it.

Personal opinion? Because depression kills more people than cancer. Why? Because people get treated when they have cancer. When they're depressed, they fight it and lose. Ultimately coming to the only "logical" choice a depressed person can make; if they kill themselves then the pain can go away.

At Japan's Sony building, they had "suicide nets" hanging around the building. When I first saw them I thought it was to keep birds off the trees or something. Then I asked someone what they were and they replied "Jisatsu kyatchi" which is suicide catch. Shit is no joke. Depression is not a game. Go get help if you honestly think you should go.
