@liloreo after he retired he said that he regretted having slaves, calling it "The Only Unavoidable Subject of Regret", which was actually scrutinized at the time because it was such an unpopular opinion he wouldn't speak openly about. He was most likely a product of the times. I'm sure if he was alive today he would have different views on slavery. It was just so ingrained in society back then.

@liloreo, you can't really judge a person by todays standards when they are from a different era. That would be like saying that if you brought a Pharaoh back to life, he would just ignore all of the advancement and understanding of the last 4000 years since his death and just try and build a pyramid. Of course, this would ignore the immediate paradigm shift of waking in an advanced civilization with a god-like level of technology.
