Yo man, welcome to MO. My advice is to just go out there and post in forums, make interesting thread topics that you yourself find interesting, and you'll make friends as time goes by. Don't hesitate and worry too much because there are lots of nice folks here.

Heyoo, welcome to MO!! Its something you just kinda have to jump into... you can take your time with it though, creeping is a thing everyone does at some point i think. Just find forums you can talk about, there are usually people who share the same viewpoint on something, or want to just mess around.. Enjoy your stay and make plenty of friends!!
