Overused Powers

lonelyvampire666
What are some of the most overused powers so i know how to avoid them. I feel like fire is def one of them but its kind of a staple.

nothing wrong with some elementalists in your story! but if you wanna keep it fresh... super strength id say is number one idk the genre, but maybe have them using imbued weapons? so the humans dont have powers, the weapons do whats the plot?

I want to have a dark/fantasy story but also have decent action. Im still fleshing out the plot right now, but I want to have some kind of organization that protects the world and have a powerful mentor like figure the main character can look up to.

There's always that one character that seems to think 30 steps ahead, it's less a power, but still used quite often.

if the reason is so you can use unique ones im just gonna go ahead and skip out thinking about some boring generic bullshit and ill steal saryn from warframe spreading a virus that gets worse as it goes, a super biological weapon, she drops a spore on an enemy, when she attacks it with toxic lash, the spore bursts spreading to other enemies now dealing consistently growing corossive dps (which shreds enemy armour by 25% of their current armour not their max) to many enemies, killing them also spreads the spores which goes great with her ult miasma, which makes a big cloud of viral damage that actually halves the hp

so medieval times? well a story as old as time is a power that is used for both good and bad purposes, the organization using it to protect and people and the bad for their own selfish gain problem with that is good and bad dont exist, its all perspective so its best to try and subvert that is you can whats the antagonistic force? is it people or monsters?

datboi how could she stop it from spreading to her allies if theyr spores? iv always love blood powers personally blood bending in avatar and manipulating your own blood like the black blood in soul eater are the koolest

I was thinking monsters, but I want to flesh them out really well. Make them almost seem human in a way.

@Lamby I like the idea of imbued weapons. Because that leaves just a human helpless without it. instant conflict and character development. How about something like binding or fusion? When two characters fuse into one character sharing memories, HP, and abilities. I was gonna make an MO based rpg (MOMMORPG) with this as the basis of plot and gameplay, but this dream was too tall for my motivation to reach and nobody cares.

It depends on what kind of universe you are building. Fire is definitely one, telekenesis, lightning are two more I see often. Super speed as well... Besides that, I dont think any power is overused if it is unique. I.e fire manipulation. Bakugou is a good example of it done right imo. Todoroki/Endeavor being the more traditional example. Telekenesis - Imagine telekenesis where you could control the object, but if you manipulated it for too long it broke/blew up/you passed out? Or a scenario where you could only manipulate objects you could physically carry etc Lightning - I dunno how to make it work in a unique way tbh. Perhaps making it so the lightning was required to be formed from a conductive material, or it had to be summoned from the sky? Or i think Denki Kaminari (MHA) does it justice as well Super Strength - Deku and All might show how that can be made interesting. Its not the POWERS that are overused. Its the fact that the same powers are used in the SAME WAY. Make them unique, give them good drawbacks or conditions to work... IMO thats way more interesting than coming up with some unique, never before seen ability. My 2c though.
