A lot of people in life, even your friends, do not want you to succeed. -with a girl/guy because they're jealous or envious. They might want him/her or they just might be petty and not like you finding love when they don't -to get a good job for a similar reason. they don't like you becoming successful -to lose weight or build muscle because they like having you as the fat friend - To become more confident or accomplish your goals because it forces them to question their own inadequacy and inaction A lot of people like to think of life as a sitcom. they are the main character and everyone else is kind of just there to highlight their own lives. They love comfort and routine and are averse to change. So when the jobless out of shape single friend of their's suddenly seems to be losing weight, getting a partner, and making a success out of their lives and following dreams,they can and do sometimes try to sabotage that friend.
