What makes a good shounen protagonist?

jakekaine
Hi guys! So I'm thinking of doing a superhero OC inspired by shounen protagonists! Thing is, I really want to do the concept justice, so I need to know what makes a good shounen protagonist!

Passion, conviction, a bias towards action, and an unconventional way of addressing the challenges that are poised against him/her. Honestly, one of the best examples of a shonen protagonist I could give is a deconstruction of one. Take Shiro from Fate. A character like him can only shine as brightly as he does because of how broken he is under the surface. But he's broken in a way that actually spurs him in a very different direction than most broken characters are. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tbv_040Uj1Y It's a good angle to take, when blending eastern shonen protags with western super hero protags. But it's by no means the only one.

The "never give up" and "prevailing through anything" aspects are a must. Should be moderately handsome, but not too much b/c there should be another hot guy somewhere else.

Most qualities already mentioned here, but I'd like to add a factor of realism. When I say realism, i don't mean they can't blow shiz up or live in a really fantastical world. What I mean is whether they feel like a person. There are others who can explain this much better than I can. I remember at around age 15 rewatching every DBZ fight just to sadistically watch Goku get punched and skip every blow he landed. I hate Goku because he seems like a real jerk and I really think the only reason he's loved is his power and eating habits. That whole statement was completely unrelated, I just needed to fill my daily "Screw DBZ" prescription. The real point now I'm done being an abusive waifu to Akira Toriyama! ......Okay, that was bull crap, I added this preface to the next paragraph because I realized I was rambling my hatred for SAO and forgot the initial question, but I also didn't wanna delete it because I spent TIME typing this, dang it! I get really sick of anime protagonists who are what the plot needs them to be at any given moment or OP without an actual reason, hence why I haven't been watching much as of late. I don't know if this problem is as prevalent as it was when I started taking a break, but I used to find that I would be bored by a season's final battle and just be itching for it to end so I could cross it off my watch list, and regardless of the spectacle if I don't see the point of this fight, I'm bored. SAO Gungale online was the worst one. I legit think they were only having that final battle because the script said to. Frankly I wonder if the anictor (like an actor, but animated) playing Kirito was spouting heroic crap because he realized how bland this "climax" was otherwise. No shade at the anictor, David Steven Murphy. Love ya, man! Sure is a shame ya keep playing Kirito, though! Murphy should drop SAO and be the replacement anictor for Newt in the next season of Cory in the House if they ever get to animating it... The manga is ahead by four seasons now!
