Best places to make local friends?

Some say bars and night clubs, some say churches and singles groups, some say cafés and cons, and some say jobs and campuses. But I feel neither of these help much. Parents get overprotective on you leading you nowhere but loneliness, boredom and depression. In my area, most people are into overrated trends, as well as being "country folks" or only watching American movies and/or TV shows. I have a bad taste in most popular trends like them, especially when others in my family tell me not to go in any of them and follow their equally unfitting recommendations. When I trust my feelings and follow them, my family disagrees with them and even wanted me to carry on their pieces of family history, especially their homeland. The most prominent people my family put me around were old people, disabled people, Christians, and all of the above. Any advice?

hm... if you know what u like go to places that do that stuff. I like stanced cars.. I often go to stance shows ( i have cool friends there ) I liked to play magic of gathering ...went to local shop that sell that (lots of nice people there) I like anime ... went to animu shop <3 ... everyone was very friendly ... Works for me. Another advice... maby be in a way advert of yourself? I like metal... I dress black ... I listen to it in car etc. I like anime I put posters at home etc. I don't mean to force people with 'yourself' ...but beeing your self, they with one glimpse of you will know what are u in to. So whenever you go ... club .. local bar... some local event... you might find mindlike people.
