is it worth watching neon genesis evangelion??

chocopyro
Well, if you wanna watch one of the most influential animes from the 90s, go for it. It has its moments. I never really got into it back then though, but that's probably because I made the mistake of watching the end of Evangelion first... Fuck, my mind. Don't start there!

It's a bit overrated but it's still a classic series, I'd say it's worth watching just for the experience honestly. It's by no means a bad series.

Worth! Watch its TV anime first then movies! EVA is historic!Rei is the first emotionless goddess to some extent

Well, the movies not so much (1.0, 2.2, 3.3 etc). The show though, yes. When I was younger and watched it, it sent me into a bit of a depression. But it was a great show to watch. Even if it doesn’t have an emotional impact on you, watch it for the fact that it was the anime that legitimized it as an art.

YES YES YES and YES well, if you like anime that touch philosophical concepts and rely quite heavily of symbolism, behind the plot details and ambiguity it's not a show to enjoy on a Friday evening, it's not a show for everyone also, the last part had to be done on a low budget, so don't expect stellar animation-work Its strength lies in its atmosphere and the concepts it touches and it sure as hell holds it's own today, even without all that jazz about it being influential and a classic.

So I was one who earlier this year took the plunge and spent way too much buying it on dvd to watch it again as I first saw it in the 90s and never saw end of eva but now I have it all and I honestly there aren't that many anime out there I would say this about but it was worth every penny I'm glad to own it. I think the meme culture/asuka/rei bickering around it has kinda given it a bad rap. Is it the greatest anime of all time? No. But as many have said in this thread I think it's one of those classics that every serious Anime fan should check out at least once in their lifetime and it's definitely up there. Again if you have a leaning towards more cerebral anime- it's take on the human condition is interesting. If you do watch it keep an open mind and allow it to take you on a journey. I think alot of younger fans who watch it nowadays come from a skewed perspective expecting it to be depressing or heavily fucked up so they miss the other things in the series- it's multilayered and I for one am always a fan of that in my anime. Something lost over time i think. Happy watching. Here's my anniversary EVA shirt

When I was young and watched it it was the best anime ever. Now IDK if I'd feel the same way. When your young and still impressionable it really will put you into a depressive funk.
