For me this pretty much clears up what I couldn't understand. Basically my mind could not get past the idea of an "image macro" so now I understand that is just one form that people use to make memes. On top of that, what made it harder for me to understand it was the fact that I did not understand the references. I was also a bit surprised to see Richard Dawkins mentioned in this article, I really was not expecting that.
