Don't accept friend requests before someone talks to you first! There's some people that will try to message immediately

What Yuki-chan said. Most of the people that regularly frequent the forums are good peeps, so I often get confused as to why this site has a bad rep. But there are people who only communicate through private messages, and since several of those people really only talk to the opposite gender, I can't really speak for them. Welcome to the site.
