I recently had the opportunity to join, but transferred to another college campus. I wanted to join an anime club to see how it is and maybe connect with people who share similar interests. I thought it would have been nice to step out of the my life for a brief moment and let out my inner otaku.

Genuinely terrible, do not recommend. The people there are among the worst people in the school when I was in it. You either have to be very good at art, be extremely public about your interests (to a personal level), have friends already in it to start a clique in it, or have a ton of OCs to talk about openly to be able to interact properly. Nerds are still seen as nerds and it wasn't anything of the 'safe haven' it's pointed out to be, since not all otakus are friendly and welcoming, they're just normal people. It's a lot of cringey interactions and it's hard to work your way in without having a special talent. However the experience definitely could vary, and these are just what I experienced from it back in high school.

No school I went to had any clubs, sadly. But I would have joined one regardless of the cringe factor.

Yes actually, I went to a couple of its meetings but I never fully attended each one.
I thought it was whack cause they played main stream series like One Piece and etc.

Trust me I joined the anime club at a library and both times suck.
The librarian that started the anime club was really cool but when it came to the people that were anime fans it was really small and they were those types that only talk to those undercover anime fans that didn't talk to newcomers has a really made me feel like I was an outsider. And it made it worse when this guy came into the room not to watch anime but to eat up all the snacks in fart while my ex and I were watching anime plus drawing to pass the time.....What made it worse was the fact that some of the people were from my school but treated me like an outsider even at school when I try to talk to them to see if they were going to be at Anime Club.....
and when I went again everybody looked at me like what the hell are you doing here.... It truly shows what kind of people are out there when it comes to wanting to have the same amount of interest as others.

My highschool anime club was great during my sophomore year when it was well over 30+ people. We’d do all sorts of trivia games and watch all types of anime that were new and just coming out each season. It was an absolute blast and I really bonded with the club leaders who were seniors at the time. Then majority of the club graduated the year after I joined and junior and senior year for me in the club sucked cause attendance got really low, but when it was flourishing the club was truly awesome.

Experiences, places and people differ from person to person.
When it comes to life and especially your hobby plus interacting with others, it is best to try new things unless it is a bad idea (f.e. drugs, smoking, dangerous/stupid activity etc).
Even if most people in here would say that the anime clubs are bad based on their experience it still should not prevent others from seeing things themselves. Who knows before hand if someone else likes it or not. The people in a club in a different place or even the same place may mix differently. It is all about the chemistry between people and personalities. Times may change, people may grow, new people come to the scene, rules might differ and so forth.
You will not lose anything from simply going and seeing things yourself. You can always not go after the first, second etc time if things do not work out the way one wants.
I personally have good experiences with both my old university anime club and now recently a club/meeting group for adult people who like anime etc stuff.
Without trying and in a sense going outside my comfort zone to see how things are, I would not have found situations and experiences that have made me grow as a person and just in general experience something fun. These situations have provided me opportunies to seek others in the same hobby and just be a bit more open about myself.
I highly recommend everyone to try atleast your local anime clubs if you have one there and if you are interested in them.
After that it is up to you to determine how you want to proceed.
