When comedy makes things R E A L

lilcutie
What do you people think about comedic shows and movies, who is for the most part fun an laughs, but takes a serious turn. Maybe just for a minute, or an episode. For example, "The Office" a funny and silly show. But when Michael (SPOILER) leaves the office, I cry rivers. What do you think about moments like that? Like them? Hate them? Favorite moment?

I enjoyed Stromberg a german office life show full of racist, hate and dirty humour. It starts pretty funny and a had a good atmosphere but it turns darker each season and from a funny show it turns more to reality than you wish. I like these kind of plottwists.

I definitely enjoy shows like that. Gintama is probably the best example I can think of. There those episodes which are as ridiculous as it can get (One example of which when the main characters fight a psychological battle of wits of trust and betrayal over pieces of toilet paper) and others where shit goes down and it is either life or death moments. I am not really sure how the writer makes it work so well, but it just does! It definitely strikes the right balance. I think that's the hardest part about shows like these. Striking the right balance is never easy. The show just fails if you either make the plot into a complete joke or if you take yourself too seriously. I've seen examples on both ends of the spectrum, so when I do find shows that fall just right in that rare sweet spot, I definitely enjoy them a lot! If you know any other shows with that right balance, then be sure to tell me. I'd be excited to watch them ^-^

You should watch more British humor. It is full of that dry wit and often dark subjects. Sometimes it's more awkward than dark. You might get a feel for it as you browse the comedians and comedy clips... Or you could binge watch Peep Show clips on YouTube and wonder what runs through people's minds

British humour is great. My one friend introduced me to it through Monty Python, Mighty Boosh etc. The Mighty Boosh is really surreal. I'm like 90% sure there were substances involved in that show. There is one episode where it got real. They are stranded on a desert island and they starts hallucinating. I felt feelings. Anyways, I like it when there is a tonal shift in some episodes. It keeps the viewer on their toes.

Have all the Monty Python skits on DVD. Well...my pops has em but he let me hold onto them. As far as tonal shifts go you gotta be careful or the tonal shift might unintentionally be comedy itself. Like that weird transition in Bambi right after his mum dies Oh Spoilers if any of you were thinking of watching Bambi

Whoa, super cool dad! I think you are in the clear on that one. Everyone had more than 60 years to watch Bambi. Y'all missed your chances.
