@cero What people don't think of are the people in South Vietnam during that time. They didn't dare speak to shop keepers or even neighbors for fear of them being a Viet Cong sympathizer or agent. If they found out that they supported the US or the South Vietnamese government they could find their entire family murdered the next day. Even worse if the Viet Cong found a village that didn't want anything to do with the war they would burn it down and kill everybody inside. They were scared of the US soldiers since the soldiers didn't know their alignment. If they were Viet Cong that could mean they would have their village raided and some paranoid soldiers would sometimes kill people based off of suspicion. Know a man who was in the ARVN up until the fall of Saigon in 1975. He quickly made his way through Laos and into Thailand where he eventually ended up in the US. He lost his wife and a daughter in the process. His testimony was that it was a very scary time. He didn't know who to trust and didn't know what was going to happen. His situation wasn't very good. Like a regular civilian, he couldn't trust other people since if they were Viet Cong that would spell his end. He got lucky and the people who helped him get out of Vietnam were also doing their best to get out as well. Even more lucky was that there were no Viet Cong agents among them to turn the group in.
