@momoichi The reason is because it was a very easy effect to do. If I remember correctly it is nothing more than laying a few layers of blue lightning effect on the film during editing. An example of this taken the the extreme and done very well is the Emperor's lightning hands in Return of the Jedi

@dyadka_yar seems like a mix of that and it was trendy, damn shame too cause it appeared in movies that otherwise solely used practical effects, and used them amazingly.
