Help me start watching anime!!

Hey there guys. Been on the site a few days, met some nice/cute people. Anyways I was hoping to get some suggestions of what anime's to start watching as I am new to the whole scene. I have watched most of the Ghost in the Shell series as I am a huge fan of cyber punk (low life meets high tech) and was wondering if I could get some suggestions on similar types of anime to break me in. I have to admit I never embraced anime when I was younger as something about the art style and characters put me off. However I do enjoy the quirky Japanese humor found in the Metal Gear Solid series. As a huge film nerd I thought is was time to put me prejudices behind me to try and seek some awesome stories.
