Because a portion of them are loud, obnoxious and generally bother people by ignoring basic rules of society. :P

Because people pay attention to the idiots in otaku culture and there are a lot of stupid otakus in this world and people look at those and paint a picture as if that's what we all are. Basement dwelling neckbeards just ruining the fun for us reasonable people in otaku culture. And don't even get me started on the goddamned weeaboos.

hope so I like being myself instead of being "normal" and I wouldn't consider myself loud or any of that I'm very quite and don't talk loud unless I have to ( even then I don't talk loud enough) I guess I'm one of shy clumsy otakus

Idk take this with a grain of salt but a lot of people into anime can be pretty frikkin weird. I stayed away from the anime clubs in hs and college. They just seemed yeah. Also some of the online community from what I've can be really elitist as to what is considered good anime. (Calling ppl plebs, filthy casuals. Looking at you MAL and /r/anime sometimes).
