Whats a ship anyway?

So recently i've been on this site for a few months now and i noticed a few thins people are calling shipping- majority of the time its like putting two kids in a closet in pre-school. i think atleast, People have tried to ship me with a few people and turns out i had no real interest in them, so i think its when somebody likes a person or if two people they are shipped together. I never understood the concept and find it kinda childish, but maybe i just dont understand it.
