Well assuming things you dont know is rude, so i can see where they come from. And i think what you describe barely happens.

Something similar happened with my friend, but it was race related. He was in rural China and an asian guy passed him, so he greeted him in Chinese and the guy was offended because he was actually Japanese.

@jesper0 It's happened to me twice. I was certain working retail that I was talking to a sir. I was not. 1 of them was understanding and the other was unreasonable, as many things led me to believe they were indeed a man.
