transexuals using restrooms they identify themselves with

sherflow
Like most things Trans, there is alot of grey. This is brought up alot with Transgender people, usually asked by friends of friends or from an upstart who is transitioning (which is the only reason I'm participating in this thread). It's usually down to how well you "Pass" because if you look "passable" and use the men's bathroom, guys more often or no get freaked out or are uncomfortable, so if you can "pass" as female then I'd say use the women's bathroom if not the men's (vice versa). But then again if you're all dolled up and not "passable" what then? you run the risk of making everyone uncomfortable, like I said a lot of grey. It's easy to dictate an answer/solution when you're not in their shoes. As for Transsexuals, What's the point in using a urinal if you don't got what it's used for? My Transgender Two pence.

Yeah, I remember discussing this in High School with a teacher of mine. Definitely a bad idea. That is just asking for trouble; Rather than remodeling every public restroom in the world they should just remodel the education system.

Honestly, I don't care what bathroom anyone uses as long as they aren't doing anything to offend someone, like showing off their dong or looking under the stall doors. Using urinals is definitely for the mens' bathroom only. Once or twice in my life I have seen bathrooms that were "unisex" and they didn't seem to have anything bad about them. Of course it depends where it is, I wouldn't have a unisex bathroom in the ghetto or some dangerous/shady place.

There are devices for transgendered women to pee as they were men.. I can't say I've ever seen or used one. Only that I know they exist. I have met a few transgendered people in my life time and they seem to be smart enough to decide for themselves which washroom they would like to use and while there are people who enjoy making other people uncomfortable I think most transgendered people aren't really looking to make anyone uncomfortable. Personally, so long as no one is peeing or pooping on me or at me, I could care less how they're getting their bodily waste out. I don't understand what it is about having a man in a women's bathroom or a woman in a men's bathroom that makes people uncomfortable.. Does it have to do with sex? There are gay men and women that use the bathrooms.. *shrugs* I think all bathrooms should just be unisex. Er.. though maybe not in the ghetto :P

@Mikorin Yes, they do exist. Some even look just like realistic man-bits painted and all. I think they can be expensive, though. I'm sure if I had transitioned that far, I would still opt for the private stalls, though, since it can be complicated if not set up and they may not be real enough to fool guys who catch a glimpse(sure it's an unspoken rule not to look, but still).

I think the overarching problem is that we can never make everyone happy. If the whole world just desexualized/degenderized then this wouldn't be an issue, but that's never going to happen. The most important thing is to be kind and understanding towards people we encounter rather than dismissive and judgmental. Unfortunately, you can't count on people being like that either.

I can see why people would be bothered by trans people using the wrong restrooms, but the main worry seems to be about rape, and it's already been pointed out that a gay or lesbian person is just as likely to rape someone in the bathroom, so that argument is somewhat invalid. I don't see the harm in it really. I'd be surprised if I saw a male in the female toilets, and I might question them on it to make sure they hadn't just walked into the wrong room (it does happen), but if they said they were trans I'd mostly likely apologise and let them go about their business; it really doesn't bother me - we go in separate stalls anyway, so what's the harm? It could be more of an issue for the men due to the urinals, but in my experience men generally don't care if a woman walks into their restroom anyway.

Rape and children confusion So with that logic girls don't mind guys walking on their restrooms either

My next question would be do trans WTm still get the same preference and privilege as regular girls do Looking it at it from a court kind of situation like with rape, domestic abuse and so on ?
