The Word Otaku Good? Bad? Thoughts?

nikita_13
Just to add to the point of Otaku no Video, all the live action mocumentary segments were intentionally made to exaggerate the negative aspects of otaku and used people that were involved with, or were a part of Gainax at the time of filming, including the American fan who was one of the founding members of General Products USA, a branch of Gainax merchandising in the early years, and used the names from the other two founders for his name.

I think it's just a word, but I do understand the point the other guys are making when they say it's like the N-word for anime fans. However, nothing's going to get solved if all we do is just fight about if it's good or not. Something will happen if someone perhaps comes up with a replacement for it, and maybe we'll get somewhere? Just a suggestion.

I don't mind it but I don't identify myself with it. I just like anime and manga

For myself, I'm happy with the name, it shows how much pride I have in anime, being called anything else than an otaku would be an insult, of course some don't like the name, and I can understand that. It can be misused, but it can be misunderstood as well. For me, otaku simply means a desire for japanese culture(Anime, Manga, Games and Traditional culture). And I have that desire, so, hence that's what I am; Otaku... Extraordinaire! *Shrugs* Beats the heck of trivial words like 'dork' or 'nerd' or 'geek', otaku sounds a lot better(And cooler to me). I also consider myself a bit of a NEET as well, but irl won't let me be more of one... Also, I work harder than anyone else, to show what the True strength of an otaku can be! If you are ridiculed for it, then show them that they are wrong, show how weak they are and how strong you are! Don't let anyone destroy what you believe! If you consider yourself an otaku, then never give up on it! If not then reject the name with all your strength! You are you, I am me, and nothing can change that.

i guess it really depends if you take the word in and of itself then it doesnt have a positive meaning to it but as its been stated its become a bit of a pop term like nerd geek ect. honestly i think it depends on the person whos doing the judging that would make the term mean what it will mean . for example i could be considered both a bibliophile(a person who loves or collects books, especially as examples of fine or unusual printing, binding, or the like.) and an otaku becuase i own over 15,000 dollars worth of books from the years i have collected my favorites(i am only 24 ) is that an excessive amount of books and manga -yes is it unhealthy-i dont think so. my bills are paid i socialize and am a functioning member of society.do i give a shit one any one thinks-lmao that just funny.

@ supernovagirl08 I have over 300 videogames, have 100's of hours worth of anime and dozens of manga in my computer, I have over 4k worth in scifi books and mythology and language books (some psychology in it too), over 6k worth in my computer, and have all my bills paid, go to work (slavery since I work enough to say I have little to no social life) And somehow try to go to the gym at least 3 times a week. Woot the hell am I? I do t see any identifying name for me :'( ... And even after all that I still want to go to cons on my spare time or fin d a girl ...

In my experience, to the Japanese Otaku is the same as weeaboo is to us. Even Hayao Miyazaki says he hates anyone who self Identify as Otaku. Even though Anime is a huge part of japan, those who have the figurines and coat their rooms in paraphernalia are looked down on. The best example I can come up with is pot. An individual who smokes it but doesn't have huge outward signs of it is accepted. An individual who watches anime but doesn't have huge outward signs of it is accepted. An individual who smokes pot, dresses in rasta or hippie/beatnik, and coats their room in posters and items about pot are looked down on as trash and shunned by the populous at large. An individual who watches anime, dressed in cosplay, and coats their room in posters and items about anime are looked down on as trash and shunned by the populous at large. But outside of Japan, Otaku is just a descriptor of an anime freak. In America, we have Weeaboo as the insulting tag. Were I to tell people I like Anime, I would be offended if they called be Weeaboo and shrug off being called Otaku. it's all about what culture you are in that influences the power in words. And on a side note, Japan has a very strict anti-drug policy. Treating pot the same as others would treat heroin. They do not allow it at all, as far as I know, not even medical. So japan is like it is, WITHOUT being high.
