ROB/Villager/Ness main here. I've been playing Smash for awhile competitively so if anyone wants to know any AT I would be happy to teach you. Since you mentioned you main Link, you should probably start canceling your jump with a item toss, namely a bomb. Just jump and flick c-stick (I suggest setting it to tilt, if you are using a GC controller) before your character leaves their jump-squat animation (the animation where your character is still on the ground and not airborne. This differs between characters. I think Link's jump-squat is 6 frames in Smash 4. At least that's what it was in Melee.). If done correctly Link will slide forward while throwing the bomb the direction you pressed on the c-stick, making this a great spacing technique. (It's great for stuffing approaches and going in for your own.) While this can be done with any controller using just the A button to throw items and not the c-stick, using the c-stick ensures that you are more in control of your character rather than forcing you to sacrifice your character's movement for another move. Let me explain. In Smash games like Melee and Brawl, using the C-stick is vital since it allows you to input aerials (such as backwards aerial) without turning your main stick the other way. In competitive Melee, you can usually see Falcon mains jump backwards, facing left while moving moving right, then input a forward aerial (The Knee) and land it while maintaining the control of their character in the air, and still facing left. So yeah Smash stuff. If you guys want to know anything else just ask and I'll probably pop in with more advice / AT.
