Cosplay help. Alt UN vs. Crossplay

Cosplay help. Alternate UN vs. Crossplay? Can anybody tell me the difference between alternate universe *genderswap version* vs crossplay? Is there any or is it still considered "crossplay? Example: Say someone wanted to cosplay as Battle Angel Alita (Gunmm) but as a male version. They didn't plan on having the same hair style or color and maybe have slightly modified clothing and maybe modified or extra weapons. Would/could it be considered an Alt UN, Crossplay, both, or a sad attempt at changing a character/original character? Thoughts anybody?

Well I don't think it would be classified as crossplay, mainly because of the alterations. I suppose it would be a nice alternate universe. It always good to try and be unique you want to try and standout among those of the same character. Example , 10 ichigo Kurosakis yet one has a blue instead of red hollow mask. A Small change but you'll probably remember that one the most.
